Benign Arrhythmias in Infants and Children
Jae Kon Ko
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(1):1-5.   Published online January 15, 2005
Pediatricians often encounter some electrocardiographic abnormalities in infants and children. However, treatment or referral to pediatric cardiologist is not indicated for all arrhythmias. Many of them are benign in nature. Benign arrhythmias can be defined as the arrhythmias that no serious problem currently exists and no treatment is needed. The prognosis of benign arrhythmias is so good that the condition...

QT Dispersion after Chemotherapy with Anthracyclines in Children
Jae Kon Ko, Young Hwee Kim, In Sook Park, Jong Jin Seo, Hyung Nam Moon
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2001;44(8):908-915.   Published online August 15, 2001
Purpose : Anthracycline induced cardiotoxicity is well known and its pathology is characterized by localized myocardial cell necrosis and myocardial fibrosis. The variability in QT interval duration amongst the different leads of the standard 12-lead ECG(QT dispersion) is considered to reflect inhomogenous repolarization of the myocardium. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of anthracycline on cardiac...

Purpose : Histologic studies have revealed ectopic location and hypoplasia of sinus nodal tissue in left atrial isomerism. The purpose of this study is to characterize the atrial rhythms corresponding to these histologic abnormalities in left atrial isomerism. Electrocardiograms in left atrial isomerism are characterized by multiple atrial rhythms with abnormal P-wave axes, but the complex nature of atrial rhythms...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1997;40(9):1258-1264.   Published online September 15, 1997
Purpose : Although the data of radiofrequency catheter ablation(RFCA) of supraventricular tachycardia in adults has been accumulated in several centers in Korea, few data are available on its efficacy and safety in pediatric ages. We reviewed the data in young patients who underwent this procedure in a pediatric cardiology center, to evaluate the indications, early results, complications, and short-term follow-up data. Methods : We retrospectively...

Four Cases of Pulmonary Artery Sling with Bridging Bronchus
Seung A Lee, Jung Yeon Shim, Young Hwue Kim, Jae Kon Ko, In Sook Park, Soo-Jong Hong, Chang Yee Hong
Clin Exp Pediatr. 1997;40(5):709-715.   Published online May 15, 1997
Pulmonary artery sling with bridging bronchus is not only rare but also difficult to diagnose unless specially sought. When young infant suffers from prolonged or recurrent wheezing, possibility of underlying anomalies of the tracheobronchial trees or great vessels should be considered, even though bronchiolitis and gastroesophageal reflux are the most common causes. We experienced four cases of pulmonary artery sling with...

Catheter Ablation of Atrial Flutter Using Radiofrequency Energy in a Child :A Case Report
Jae Kon Ko, In Sook Park, Young Hwee Kim, Chang Yee Hong, Jae Joong Kim, You Ho Kim
Clin Exp Pediatr. 1996;39(10):1455-1460.   Published online October 15, 1996
Atrial flutter is a potentially life threatening complication of repair or palliation of congenital heart disease and is frequently drug resistant. Recent studies in human have demonstrated that common type atrial flutter is due to macro-reentry in the right atrium and that the reentrant circuit may involve slow conduction in the low posteroseptal area of the right atrium. Catheter ablation of atrial flutter has...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1994;37(7):969-975.   Published online July 15, 1994
Atrial flutter is an infrequent, but potentially unstable tachyarrythmia that occurs in pediatric ages. Transesophageal atrial pacing was used for treatment of 10 episodes of atrial flutter in 7 patients. At the time of atrial flutter conversion, patients were 6 days to 14 years old. 6 patients had associated with congenital heart disease. The atrial cycle length of atrial flutter ranged from...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1990;33(2):229-233.   Published online February 28, 1990
The scimitar syndrome, a rare complex anomaly, consists essentially of an anomalous pulmonary vein draining whole or part of right lung into inferior vena cava and its curved Turkish sword (scimitar) like appearance has provided the name of this syndrome. Associated anomalies are frequent, such as hypoplasia of the right lung and right pulmonary artery, abnormalities of bronchial architecture and lobation, rightward displacement of...

Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome is association of thrombocytopenia with giant hemangioma. A 20 days, male patient had thrombocytopenia, the hemangioma involved the skin of the right distal femur. This patient was placed on combined therapy with radiation and steroid. Following the conservative therapy, the hemangioma regressed and the platelet returned to normal range. We presented the case with brief review of the literatures.

Left Ventricular Function in Chronic Severe Anemia by Echocardiographic Study.
Jae Kon Ko, Chang Yee Hong
Clin Exp Pediatr. 1985;28(9):880-887.   Published online September 30, 1985
It is well known that chronic anemia is associated with hemodynamic alterations like increased cardiac output and stroke volume and decreased peripheral vascular resistance. Left ventricular size and function were studied by echocardiography in 16 chronic anemia patients, mainly aplastic anemia, without evidence of cardiac decompensation. Left ventricular dimension, stroke volume, ejection fraction and fractional shortening were calculated. The LV...
